Six Students Receive Poster Awards at Drosophila Conference

The Genetics Society of America congratulates three graduate students and three postdoctoral fellows who received poster awards last month at the 49th Annual Drosophila Research Conference in San Diego, California. Winners received cash awards and a set of GSA’s Conversations in Genetics DVD’s of interviews with prominent geneticists.

Graduate Student Awards:

	First Award: Holly A. Morrison, University of California, Berkeley
	Second Award: Johnnie Chau, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio
	Third Award: Tammy Chan, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas

Postdoctoral Fellow Awards:

	First Award: Radmila Capkova-Frydrychova, NIEHS/NIH LMG, Research Triangle Park, NC
	Second Award: John M. Olson, University of California, Los Angeles
	Third Award: Ana Talamillo, CIC bioGUNE, Bizkaia, Spain

Executive Director Elaine Strass Interviewed for PLoS Genetics

The February issue of PLoS Genetics features an interview of GSA Executive Director Elaine Strass. Elaine, who also serves as Executive Director for our sister society, the American Society of Human Genetics, talks about her career with GSA and ASHG, her responsibilities in both societies, and why she loves her job. Although interviewed by ASHG member Jane Gitschier (UCSF) at the 57th Annual ASHG Meeting in San Diego last October, Elaine talks considerably about GSA in the interview. HHMI Announces New National Competition for Early Career Faculty

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) plans to select as many as 70 early career scientists to receive six-year, non-renewable appointments to HHMI and receive substantial research support to move their research in creative new directions. Announced on March 10th, the program is aimed at researchers who have run their own labs for two to six years and are now at the point of establishing their own independent research programs. Scientists who wish to be considered for this competition must indicate their intention to submit an application by April 30, 2008. The deadline for completed applications is June 10, 2008.
